Ram-dao are traditional sacrificial swords used in the Hindu ritual sacrifice of animals.[1] The large, curved blade is designed to decapitate a sacrificial animal in a single stroke. Ram-daos are used in a hacking swing and are distinct from both the Chinese Dao and the Naga Dao swords which were traditionally used as slashing weapons. The swords hilt and blade were often adorned with precious stones and metals. The sword was also embellished with religious imagery, symbols, and texts. This type of ritual sword was used widely by cultures in multiple regions including: Nepal, Assam, Bengal, East India and North India.
This large, elaborate sword – a ram dao – from the Kathmandu Valley, is for sacrificing animals, particularly larger animals such as buffaloes. It is for severing their necks or to entirely decapitate their heads as part of ceremonies designed to appease the Hindu goddess Kali. (Human sacrifices to Kali were abandoned in Nepal in the 18th century.)
The blade, in steel, is dramatically engraved and inlaid with brass on a side with an ‘eye’ and eyebrow.
The blade is made up of Highly graded Carbon Steel and an eye with an eyebrow is engraved on one of the sides. And a beautiful handmade design is given just next to the spine of the sword. The handle is made up of Rosewood with a Double guard made up of Brass in the hilt. There is a handmade brass elephant head in the pommel to give a better look and also because religiously, The Ram-Dao relates to the Elephant.
